Rent agreement and e-stamp: what to know before you sign
What a rent agreement should include, why stamp duty matters, and what to bring when you want it drafted and printed.

A written rent agreement protects both the landlord and the tenant. It is also asked for as address proof by banks, gas connections and many offices. Stamp duty and registration rules depend on the rent amount and period, so confirm what applies to your agreement before signing.
We help you prepare a clear draft and print it, but we are not a law firm. For a high-value or long-term lease, take advice from a lawyer.
What it should include
Names and addresses of landlord and tenant, the property address, rent and deposit amounts, the period, notice period, who pays maintenance and utilities, and conditions for ending the agreement.
What to bring
Identity and address proof of both parties, passport-size photographs, property details and the agreed terms. Both parties and sometimes witnesses must sign.
Before you start
- Agree on rent, deposit and period in writing
- Bring ID and photographs of both parties
- Confirm stamp duty for your case
- Read every clause before signing
- Keep a signed copy each
Requirements can change. The responsible government department, insurer, institution or service provider decides eligibility, fees, processing and final outcomes. NISE COMPORT is an independent CSC / Pragya Kendra service centre, not a government office.
