Income tax return (ITR): what to gather before you file
Salaried, small business or pensioner: which documents make filing smooth, and which mistakes cause notices.

Filing an income tax return is easier when you gather your papers first. The forms and due dates are set by the Income Tax Department each year, so always check the current rules on the official portal before filing.
Most notices arise from mismatches between your return and the information the department already has, such as interest income or TDS. Reviewing your annual statement before filing helps.
Documents to bring
PAN and Aadhaar (linked), Form 16 if you are salaried, bank statements and interest certificates, details of investments and deductions, rent receipts if relevant, and for business income your books or a summary of income and expenses.
Before you file
Check your annual information statement and Form 26AS for income and tax deducted. Make sure your bank account is pre-validated for refunds.
After you file
E-verify the return (Aadhaar OTP, net banking or other options) within the allowed time, and save the acknowledgement.
